I do think that there is a niche for this kind of remaster, especially in an age where retrogaming is so big, but I can’t simply use that to excuse the massive flaws in Battlezone: Combat Commander’s AI, sound and controls. Now, imagine having several units to command, each with their own specific selection key and action menu, all while having to control your own character/ship. This can even include having to aim at a deployment position and pressing the spacebar.
If you want a turret, you press the various keys to build it press the key to bring up its menu and then another to order it about. Building anything requires you pressing the right key for the Recycler (or whichever building creates the units you want) to bring up a menu, which requires another key press, all while possibly being in the middle of a firefight. Again, much like every one of those games from the Nineties, they seem to use the entire keyboard layout in such a way that it just feels too complex. Another problem comes in the form of the controls. This level of basic AI stupidity just doesn’t have a place in gaming today. It has line of sight and everything, but no, it just sits and watches as the enemy tears apart your base. Like many RTS games, deploying a turret often feels pointless when it completely ignores enemy tanks, purely because they’re one pixel out of its cone of vision. Actually playing the game has its moments though, as you’re tasked with building and protecting bases, managing resources and often just going off to fight the Scion aliens. It’s like running a well-used VHS through your expensive Dolby sound system. Every line of dialogue sounds like it’s literally been phoned in, thanks to the distortion that plagues everything. This game can be run on Windows 7 and up. However, Blizzard finds a way to add some addictive magic to the game. Other than that, most of the game feels very linear. The map creator, included in the game gives you a chance to design maps to fit your strategy. The 2D graphics may ward off a few players, but the visuals are fun and engaging.
However, the rest of the units are exactly the same between teams. Heroes for either faction are very different, which sometimes can give one player an advantage over the other. Here is where some balance issues present themselves. In Warcraft 2 special units, known as heroes, can turn the tides of battle. New maps force you to search for new strategies, as well. By clicking on a unit enough times, you'll get some silly lines that are sure to make you laugh.
There's also some great voice acting adding some much-needed flair to the game. Flying units and ships take some of the combat away from the ground troops. This game offers plenty of changes that separate it from its predecessor. No matter how many times you start up a match, you will always be itching for another.
